Military Bike Ride - Panhandle Trail

Saturday, September 27 | 9:00 AM

Meet Up Details TBA

Our bicycle rides are a great way to explore Western Pennsylvania and beyond. The rides are hosted by Leo McCarthy, Army veteran and retired Moon Township police chief. Leo works hard to plan our rides, peppering them with an ounce of fun and a dash of history.

The rides are social in nature and limited to a small group of 15 riders. We take our time and enjoy the camaraderie. Most rides are between 15 and 20 miles. If you don't have a bike, we may be able to help you. Email Christine for information.

We will start at mile zero on the Panhandle Trail in Collier Twp. The Panhandle is 29 miles long one way - 6.60 miles are crushed limestone in Allegheny County and the remainder is paved in Washington Co. and Brooke Co. WV. We are going to travel out to the intersection with the Montour Trail at 8.5 miles for a round trip of 17 miles.

We will ride along the Robinson Run Creek with wonderful wooded and water views, including a huge rock quarry and windmill. We will pass by many interesting homes and historical markers. Three cold water fountains are along the way including a restroom with running water as well as many port-a-johns. The trail is dotted with shaded rest areas and bike repair stands. Our past riders found this trail to be very beautiful. Oakdale and McDonald will provide many additional interesting sites including Helicon Brewing.

Interested riders are welcome to join us for lunch afterward, at their own expense. Allow for a two-hour ride, not including lunch.

Meet up details will be provided the day prior to the ride.
